What are your thoughts on closed captioning?

p both;">While you may not know Marlee by name, if you IMDB her, I'm pretty sure you'll recognize her face. Marlee has an incredibly impressive filmography. She's been in everything from "The L Word" to "The West Wing". She even sang the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLI in 2007. However, as Ari writes,

Despite her credentials and expertise on deaf issues, an internalization she can relate, Marlee’s reality show was rejected by television broadcasters because of an assumption that primetime audiences wouldn’t appreciate watching closed captioning. That’s you. Would you appreciate it? Keep reading…

p both;">Would you choose not to watch a program because it had subtitles? What are your thoughts on the decision to reject Marlee's show?

New York State Of Mind

Yesterday I arrived in NYC. The first thing I did was head over to Nate's place. I brought him a bottle of local wine from Barboursville, VA, but there was no time to enjoy it. I had lined up a couple of apartment viewings and, as soon as I got in, it time to leave to start checking them out. I'm glad that Nate had kindly rearranged his schedule for the day. The NY subway system is decidedly far more sprawling than Boston's and I would have had a difficult time navigating it by myself.

Meet Our Friends: Tragic Chemistry

<p both;"><a href="http://atris.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/tragic_chemistry_band_music_awesomeness.png"><img inline; float: left; margin: 0 10px 10px 0;" src="http://atris.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/tragic_chemistry_band_music_awesomeness-thumb1.png" alt="" width="175" height="147" align="left" /></a>A while ago, I wrote a post inviting you to <a href="http://atris.wordpress.com/2010/02/09/please-leave-a-message/">reach out to me through Google Voice</a>. As you may know, <a title="Google Voice" rel="homepage" href="https://www.google.com/voice">GV</a> allows you to receive and manage voicemails just like e-mails. It also attempts to transcribe your messages using <a title="Speech recognition" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speech_recognition">speech recognition</a> <a title="Technology" rel="wikinvest" href="http://www.wikinvest.com/industry/Technology">technology</a>. Many of these messages are seriously entertaining, so I thought it would be fun to use them to share behind-the-scenes type stuff from some of our favorite artists with you. Geeky stuff aside, I'm seriously excited to introduce this new a'tris tradition to our 'Meet Our Friends' series, courtesy of Aric Jorgenson and Leia Manuel from <a href="http://www.myspace.com/tragicchemistryband">Tragic Chemistry</a>.</p>

<p both;">I met Leia at an Open Mic I started in my hometown, <a title="Charlottesville, Virginia" rel="geolocation" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=38.03,-78.4788888889&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=38.03,-78.4788888889 (Charlottesville%2C%20Virginia)&amp;t=h">Charlottesville, VA</a>, and was immediately blown away by her voice and <a href="http://www.myspace.com/alexandrarising">her music</a>. Leia's <a title="Human voice" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_voice">vocal</a> super powers combined with Aric's equally awesome chops and <a title="Songwriter" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songwriter">songwriting</a> skills make for some seriously captivating tunes. One of my favorite songs of theirs is called "Holiday" and Leia and Aric were so kind as to leave us this message about it.</p>

<p both;"><span center; display: block; margin: 0 auto 10px;"><center><object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q1G23f06Yj8&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q1G23f06Yj8&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object></center>Was that transcript great or what? I hope that, after listening to "Holiday," you will be recruited into their fan club! I've included it below for your listening pleasure. Enjoy!</p>

Lucy Schwartz Debuts New Music Video for “Gravity”

Around a month ago I wrote a piece in our ‘Meet Our Friends’ series about the incredibly talented - and now certifiably prolific - Lucy Schwartz [Facebook, Myspace, last.fm]. No less than a month after releasing her clip for “Help Me! Help Me!” I received this message from her on Facebook:

After watching her latest video, I completely agree with her assertion; but you can form your own opinion by watching it after the jump.

New Facebook Goodness

Today, I’d like to take a moment to invite you to check out some of the things the guys and I have done to improve our Facebook page. If you’d prefer to spot the differences yourself though, feel free to go for it by clicking here.

Still with me? Awesome! The first upgrade you’ll notice when you stop by is that select tweets now appear on our wall courtesy of the awesome developers at yakket. What’s cool about this is - if you choose to ‘become a fan’ - you’ll be able to read about some of the things we enjoy right in your news feed; so you won’t have to navigate away from what you’re doing to see what we’re up to. You could even like our posts, or share them with your friends if you wanted. That would be sweet :)

Also, in case you didn’t see my post, Four Ways to Subscribe to Our Blog, our blog entries are now fully synched with Facebook as well so you can view them in their entirety when you’re checking your updates. Some of the formatting gets lost in translation, but other than that, it’s all there!

p both;">By the way, it’s now even easier for you to visit us on Facebook. Thank to our new username, instead of having to search for a’tris to find our page, you can type facebook.com/atrismusic into your browser to go there from anywhere. Check it out!

Isn’t technology cool?

How Vinyl Records Are Made

After reading Olivier Rosset’s piece on shaped picture disc singles, I was inspired to learn how vinyl records are made. Here are a couple of clips about the process courtesy of the Discovery Channel. The voiceover work in these reminds me a lot of this educational videos we used to watch in school; but, if you get past that (and the super cheesy music), they are really interesting. Hope you enjoy them!

If you thought vinyl records were dead, you may be surprised if you click the image of the SoundScan charts I’ve included below.

I guess aping Shakespeare is the cool thing to do these days. Perhaps we should dredge through more Marlowe in the future. He never gets any love./p
